Upgrades to Look Forward To
1. New Elevate 6 Optical Heart Rate Sensor
Garmin hasn't updated its optical heart rate sensor in a long time. The Elevate 6 is said to improve accuracy. It may also bring new health features like sweat/pressure monitoring and background irregular heartbeat detection.
2. 5G Redcap + Satellite Messaging
The Fenix 8 Pro already has LTE and satellite features. But they made the watch thicker and shortened battery life. The Fenix 9 will focus on making these technologies better – thinner, more power-efficient, and more stable. Also, 5G Redcap (a lighter version of 5G) might appear on a watch for the first time.
3. A More Mature MicroLED Screen
The MicroLED version of the Fenix 8 Pro was impressive, but Garmin admitted it also made the watch thicker and drained the battery faster. The Fenix 9 may bring a second-generation MicroLED that actually delivers on the promise of saving power. I used a Fenix 8 Pro for two days back in October 2025, and I wasn't that impressed. It didn't feel like a big upgrade – it just seemed to use more battery.
4. A Stronger Processor
The Fenix series has used the same processor platform for three generations now (the frx55 Fenix 7 in 2022, the fr65 and Fenix 7P in 2023, the Fenix 8 in 2024, and the fr70 in 2025). It's very likely that the Fenix 9 will get a new chip. Hopefully, that means smoother UI response and better energy efficiency. This could be the biggest highlight of the upgrade.
5. 43mm Size Gets Premium Features
On the Fenix 8 Pro, the LTE and satellite features didn't come to the smaller 43mm version. The Fenix 9 might finally give small-wrist users all the flagship functions too.
What Users Really Want
Looking around online, Fenix users actually have pretty simple wishes:
- Thinner body (the Fenix 8 Pro is really too thick)
- Bigger screen-to-body ratio
- Fewer bugs (you know what I mean)
- Smarter health and GPS tools
Most users don't need Garmin to do anything crazy. They just want the company to fix what needs fixing and optimize what needs optimizing.
